Watch our words

We have been working with our boys about good communication. What that looks like and how to do it. I will admit we too sometimes forget as parents; but we do our best and we want our children to learn how to effectively have conversations and be good communicators. It is a learning process, especially when it comes to big feelings. Both of our children also communicate differently. Though even through their differences; I have found it is not just about the words that are used, but the tone in which things were said and whether listening was used. We want our children to grow up with a voice; but one that is said in a way to truly be heard and one in which also knows how to listen to what the other person is saying.

We live in a world where so many people want to be heard, though they are not speaking in a way that can be heard effectively; like yelling. Also, something I have learned is that to have a good, effective, conversation; we also have to listen to the other person.  Even if we disagree. Or if we need to politely end the conversation due to our beliefs and our faith. Though yelling is never effective.

Friend, I believe to love each other, we must learn to speak to each other in a way in which is kind and respectful. This world can be divided at times; we do not need to agree but starting a war with our words; leads to nobody listening. It is wiser to be kind and walk away, then use our tongue to expel our anger or differences. For words are powerful and how we use them to communicate can either bring peace or create war. God gives us wisdom and instructs us to watch what we say and how we say things. He instructs this for a reason. May we be slow to anger and talk purposefully and listen with love.
