Veterans Day

There was a cool breeze, but the day was sunny and the clouds were fluffy. My children, dad and I went to visit my grandfather’s veteran’s plaque at the local memorial. Small American flags swayed in the wind, next to the markers they were placed beside. My children were amazed at the many of veterans that served in our community; though, there are even more than shown. We have great respect for the military. Though we know not most of the people behind the names on those plaques; we are grateful for them and their service and sacrifice. Every name has a story and a purpose. Though often in today’s society, many people are more fixated on themselves, then taking the time to honor those who fought for the very things that they take for granted. My grandpa fought in WW11. He was shot and left for dead on the battlefield, fighting for his country. Though later, an unknown comrade found him and brought him to a hospital. It was there he was saved; though, he had not a name for the month he was in a coma, missing in action. When he came home from serving, his mind suffered from the casualties of war. Though I was very close to my grandpa growing up, I did not fully register all that he endured during those years that he served. Through age, I have learned to respect him even more. There are so many stories like my grandfathers. Every person that signs up is ready to endure it all, for our freedom and our safety. Whether they ever make it to an actual battlefield, they are trained and ready to go and fight, and if needed, die for their country. What a sacrifice! It got me thinking friend, about God and His sacrifice; and what he has done and still does for us. Like the soldiers that do not get enough thanks, we do the same with our faith at times. We do not give God the credit that He fully deserves. We know His name, but do we take the time to learn about Him, to thank Him? Frequently, we take for granted Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross for our lives. There is a different type of war here on earth, the biggest. Like the soldiers in war fighting for what they believe in and keeping their people safe; God fights for us, every day. He sent His son to die the worse death possible, to give us eternal life. Friend, I know my grandpa’s story, though I want to learn more. Just like I know God, and I want to more than just His name. I am grateful for the soldiers who have fought and those that continue to fight for us. I am even more grateful for God, whom is always fighting for us. So today as we honor those whom have served or are serving; may we also, every day honor God, who is always fighting on our behalf!  I want to end this note with a special Thank you to all veterans, for your unselfish service. When God said to love each other and make sacrifices for one another, you truly stepped up. My family and I, we all thank you. God bless you soldier!

John 15:12-13 NIV

My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this: to lay down one’s life for one’s friends.
