When I was about ten, my class at school was going on a field trip skiing. I had never been and was eagerly looking forward to the whole experience. We had the opportunity to bring a chaperone with us and my aunt was able to go. Which made me all the more excited for the adventure! The day started out great. We got our skis on and we were ready to conquer that hill! We grabbed onto a rope that took us up on this seemingly large hill. When we had made it to the top; my aunt went down smoothly and graciously. I went in after her, except, what started out smooth for me had gotten really rough quickly. Another kid had fallen on the hill a little bit in front of me and I did not know how to avoid them. I surely did not know how to avoid everyone else on that hill either. Before I knew it, I was watching one of my skis casually race down that hill on its own. Meanwhile I was stuck with one lone ski on me, somewhere certainly not near the bottom. Honestly, I do not remember how I made it down that hill, something tells me on my bottom. I vowed to never try such a sport again. Despite such an event, I was still glad that I got to go with my aunt on that field trip. Also, in hindsight; it was funny. Fortunately, nothing worse came from it all, but a bruised ego. Friends, though I have never gone skiing since, aside from cross country skiing that had no hills; I learned something that day. Firstly, I needed actual training in skiing. Secondly, I was evidently not the only one that did. Lastly and most importantly though; instead of feeling defeated, we must go to God for His comfort. We all do embarrassing things at times. We can choose to sulk about them and obsess, or we can choose to go to God and learn from it. Maybe we can even have a good laugh about it later. No one was hurt and I know from the outside looking in, the whole sight was comical. The enemy likes to make us obsess about silly little mistakes or embarrassing moments. When we do this, it makes us relish in our own self-pity or act pridefully. Friend, if and when something embarrassing happens, for no one’s immune to it; take a breath and go to God. Try to see the big picture. Maybe you’ll find a lesson, maybe you’ll have a good laugh, or maybe you’ll have both. My friend, we also must remember when these things happen to others too; we need to encourage, comfort and support them in such embarrassing events. For we are human and do embarrassing things too. In that embarrassment we must remember; it is going to be alright. God does not think less of us or others because we did something silly or embarrassing. Ultimately, it is His opinion that matters anyway. So, hang in there, it will pass.
Galatians 1:10 NIV
Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.
2 Corinthians 1:4 NIV
who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.
Proverbs 29:25 NIV
Fear of man will prove to be a snare, but whoever trust in the LORD is kept safe.
